In our Pro Tools HDX studio in the heart of Leeds…

Our sound studio comprises two rooms isolated from the rest of the world and each other. The configuration of the walls, angles of the windows and timed reverb ceiling tiles are all designed by Recording Architecture and ensures the recording is not disturbed by extraneous noise.

As a production space the ISO / booth houses our talent. The engineer can feed the booth with video from the Pro Tools studio for talent to sync with and join the booth into any Zoom-type meeting for directors and clients to see talent when recording via a broadcast quality camera. Our talent can see other meeting contributors to make remote recording more personal. The sound is controlled via the mixer to negate the need for people to go on mute during recording. We have a selection of microphones but generally rely on the Neumann U87 for voice overs and comm records, with a shotgun and lav to hand for ADR.

We have four mic feeds into Pro Tools Ultimate HDX, two via the Focusrite ISO 2 mic pre and two more via the C|24 mic pre. Our mics are suspended from the ceiling which makes for a tidy environment and a very child friendly space.

As a podcasting / visual radio space the setup is flipped around so the engineer is in the booth and the talent are in the bigger room. We have five Blackmagic Cinema 4k cameras feeding into an ATEM vision mixer with four Shure SM7b microphones following the same path. We record programme output and each camera/sound feed discreetly at 1080p for post production after the record. This setup can also live stream and join in a Zoom meeting if required. In this setup you can see mics, headphones and other cameras on the screen. The space is for audio led production and is not a TV studio.
